Gemma's Birth Story

This was my third pregnancy but my first time doing pregnancy yoga and it made me wonder
why on earth I hadn’t done the classes before! The class with Victoria was my favourite hour
and half of the week and was a great opportunity to relax and unwind whilst exercising the
body and the mind.

This was my third caesarean section, my first being an emergency and my second (and this
one) both elective. I could have tried for a VBAC this time but given the difficulties I had in
my first labour I didn’t want to risk trying to have my baby naturally, only then to have an
emergency c-section.

It’s quite a strange feeling knowing the date and time you are going in to have your baby and
also quite nerve racking. On the day, my husband and I had the morning to ourselves to
reflect, prepare and use our relaxation techniques before being called into surgery. I
remember all the doctors, nurses, surgeons being very attentive and explaining the procedures to me clearly.

My baby was born at 1pm, they offered for me to have skin to skin
immediately after he was born, my husband cut his cord and he held Teddy while I was being
stitched. Despite being in an operating theatre the whole thing was very calm and relaxed
throughout and at times I forgot that there was a multitude of people around us, it felt like it
was just me, my husband and baby Teddy.
